Physical Activity Attenuates the Association between Sedentary Behaviour and Risk of Death

On November 26, in a new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a subsidiary of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), a meta-analysis of 9 studies by 40 scientists from institutions such as Harvard University T.H Chan School of Public Health in USA, Rollinska School of Medicine in Sweden and Norwegian Academy of Sports Sciences showed that 30 to 40 minutes of moderate to high-intensity physical activity a day can offset the side effects of 10 hours of sedentary behaviour for the body to reduce all-cause mortality (death caused by various causes). Carrying out some frequent activities, such as cycling, walking, etc., can reduce your risk of premature death to the same level as an individual who is not very sedentary. This connection can be seen in the data accumulated by thousands of people.

On the same day, the World Health Organization released Guidelines on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour (2020 edition), emphasizing that everyone, regardless of age and ability, can engage in physical activity, and that every type of activity is beneficial to health. People tend to increase in sedentary behaviour at a time when many of them have to work at home due to COVID-19, which causes them to stay indoors for a long time. But we can still protect our health and offset the harmful effects of lack of exercise. The guideline emphasizes that people of all ages and abilities can engage in physical activity. Every type of exercise is important. All sports are valuable. No matter how much exercise is, it is better than nothing.

Two of the six key messages in the guideline are recommendations for sedentary behavior.

5 Too much sedentary behaviour can be unhealthy. It can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and type-2 diabetes. Limiting sedentary time and being physically active is good for health.

6 Everyone can benefit from increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour, including pregnant and postpartum women and people living with chronic conditions or disability.

Curriculum Ideology “Human Factors Engineering” Case Records on Class Teaching

After the start of the new semester, I undertook the task of teaching a course “Human Factors Engineering”. In fact, I taught it twice a few years ago, but I didn’t continue yet. This course is offered as an elective course for the students in related majors of business.

In Chapter 1 of Introduction, when introducing the development process of Human Factors Engineering in China, it was mentioned that Tsinghua University opened the course of industrial psychology in 1930. Chen Li published “Introduction to Industrial Psychology” in 1935, which was the earliest book introducing industrial psychology in China. Chen Li was the founder of Chinese industrial psychology, who was once served as the principal of my alma mater, the originator of the Department of Psychology, and an old gentleman we respect very much. He had been engaged in industrial psychology since the Republic of China. Researching and carrying out investigations and studies in various factories showed his patriotism and professionalism. Under the active promotion of the older generation of industrial psychology researchers, Human Factors Engineering discipline in China had been developed rapidly. In 1989, the Chinese Ergonomics Society was established, and in 1991 it became a full member of the International Ergonomics Association. In Chapter 3 of Working Environment and Color, when introducing the basic heat balance equation of the human body, it explains the importance of the micro-climate cooling system to workers in high temperature and high humidity environment. They need such a system in the enclosed protective clothing. Its main function is to absorb the thermal load of the human body, to maintain a constant body core temperature, to reduce thermal damage, to improve human working efficiency in high-heat environment, and to extend working hours, such as a space suit specially designed for astronauts. However, in the battle against COVID-19 this year, the majority of front-line medical staff wore enclosed protective clothing for a long time in the same high temperature and humidity environment, but there was no ventilation and cooling system to improve the microclimate environment in their clothes. They had no complaints and had no hesitation, which showed their patriotism and professionalism.

Participating in a Special Network Training on the Improvement of Informatization Teaching Ability Recently

In nearly three months since June, I participated in a special online training on the improvement of informatization teaching ability of colleges and universities. It aimed to combine the online teaching practice during COVID-19 epidemics to further promote the development of education informatization in the new era and improve the ability to deeply integrate information technology with education and teaching on college teachers. The teaching platform for online training was China E-learning Academy for Education Leadership and Administration. The training notice was here “Notice on Organizing and Carrying out Special Network Training on the Improvement of Informatization Teaching Ability of College Teachers“.

The training content was to watch teaching videos online, participate in two theme seminars, and finally write the training results. The teaching video involved vivid content, including six modules of informatization teaching introduction, informatization teaching practice, informatization teaching design, informatization teaching evaluation, informatization curriculum development and information security protection. Numerous college education and teaching workers introduced their many informatization teaching practices and experiences which were worth learning and referring.

I carefully watched all the teaching videos, completed online seminars actively, and wrote the final learning experience combined with my own teaching practice, especially the online teaching experience last semester. I completed the learning task of 25 hours, and obtained the electronic certificate which was a proof of study hours.

Opportunities are Always Given to The Prepared

The current domestic outbreak of COVID-19 has eased, but it continues to wreak havoc on a global scale. The outbreak has had a major impact on the global economy, and the global economic recession is a foregone conclusion. China’s rapid economic growth has always relied on the “three pillars”, one of which is foreign trade. The trend of “de-globalization” will become more and more obvious in the future, and the impact on foreign trade enterprises will be the biggest. There are a large number of domestic foreign trade companies, many of which are still foundry-based. The companies that do OEM for large foreign brands have been affected greater influence. Foreign orders have dropped sharply. They lack their own brands, and it is difficult to expand the domestic market in a short time. A fatal blow will affect the development of the companies.

In fact, there are already many local enterprises in China, starting from foundry, and started on the road of creating their own brands ten years ago. Now I want to think that the practice of a private contract manufacturing company that has maintained a long-term cooperative relationship with our laboratory design team while studying at Zhejiang University seems to be exceptionally ahead of schedule. The company is located in Xiasha, Hangzhou. It was originally dedicated to OEM for well-known foreign brands of socks. It has been deploying its own brand of sports socks since more than ten years ago. After nearly ten years of difficult operations, it has finally improved greatly. Although the coverage of the product audience is not large and belongs to the niche professional sports people, it has also opened up a market world in China.

Perhaps only such enterprises can survive in the current special period, so I think that opportunities are always given to those who are most prepared.

Carrying out Online Teaching in All Directions, All Processes at Multiple Levels

Management Statistics is a professional basic course for management science and engineering. General statistical theories and methods are included such as data collection and collation, data feature description, parameter estimation, hypothesis testing,correlation and regression analysis. Operation experiments are the operation methods and processes implemented on SPSS by commonly used statistical analysis methods.

During the coronavirus-19 pandemic period, the course is taught on the Superstar network teaching platform. Teachers and students go online synchronously, making full use of the advantages and rich functions of the platform to complete the corresponding teaching activities. Corresponding supporting materials should be provided for certification. Students have a high rate of arrivals and high participation rates in online learning. They have good academic performance and show good learning results.

The curriculum system takes a long time in the early stage of construction, but it will save time and effort when used later. All-direction teaching is reflected in the focus on classroom interaction, good teaching organization and management, and every time the class is released on time. Sign-in activities are guaranteed to ensure that all students are online. All-process teaching is reflected in the student-centered and teacher-led design of online teaching, with the design of the use of a single device to listen to the PPT, which is actually prepared for classroom test interactive design. Multi-level teaching is reflected in student learning which is provided with rich reference materials, question bank resources and video analysis of homework assignments, detailed demonstration operations for the analysis of software tools in statistical cases, and the smooth development of teaching processes such as in- and out-of-class tests, assignments, and class preparation and review.

At present, online teaching has been conducted for nine weeks, and various teaching tasks have been successfully completed. During the learning process, most students can maintain a high level of enthusiasm and can ask questions when encountering unclear questions. However, online teaching requires high self-discipline and requires students to spend more time. It can be seen that videos, chapter quiz, homework, and communication with students are beneficial, but there are also some students who are lagging in learning progress and lack of motivation and initiative.

In the process of online communication, although the teacher and each student are in different spaces, they can still deeply feel the students’ desire for knowledge at both ends of the screen. The novel teaching method makes it easier for teachers and students on heart to heart communication, almost forgeting the difference in space during the class. Online teaching is a new challenge and opportunity for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. The teaching path can only be implemented by every teacher with diligence.
